We were delighted to have recently welcomed two prominent NHS England members - Dr Dominic Slowie, National Clinical Director for Learning Disability, and Hannah Iqbal, Policy Advisor for NHS England Learning Disability Programme - to visit our #ExeterRainbowHouse. Their visit forms part of a large scale national programme that Dr Slowie is leading for NHS England, called Transforming Care, which aims to improve services for people with learning disabilities. We had the opportunity to demonstrate how our bespoke model of supported living housing works, and how we support our tenants, and their families, in making decisions about their individual personal care.
We are very proud of the feedback from Dr Slowie after the visit, with him commenting: "One of NHS England's stated aims is that people with learning disability should have a choice about where and with whom they live, and it is very encouraging to see Rainbow Living achieving exactly this; the charity demonstrates a clear commitment to allowing people to live in a Rainbow home for as long as they want to, with encouragement and support to participate and contribute to the wider community. It was inspiring to hear and see directly what shared vision, passion and commitment can bring about in terms of creating something new and effective in meeting the needs of our most vulnerable fellow citizens, and I hope that we might provide an opportunity for Transforming Care Partnerships to learn from what Rainbow Living has achieved."
We realise that without all of you none of what we do would be possible; we are so grateful to everyone who has and continues to enable us to succeed in our vision, and we hope you feel as proud as we do of such positive comments from prominent public figures in recognising our achievements – thank you one and all!

In last week's budget George Osborne proposed taking away the Personal Independence Payment, a payment which is used by disabled people to help them live more independently. We are strongly opposed to this proposal and have shown our opposition by signing this petition demanding that the plans are scrapped https://speakout.38degrees.org.uk/campaigns/save-pip. If you agree that these cuts are cruel and just plain wrong, please do add your name to the petition and help force George Osborne to do the right thing and keep this crucial support for disabled people. Thank you for getting involved, this will add further feedback on how outraged people are about these cuts which hopefully are going to be abandoned.

Today we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day! WDSD is a global awareness day which takes place on 21 March every year (21 March, or 21:3, signifies the triplication of chromosome 21, unique to persons with Down syndrome). The day aims to raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities. The theme for #WDSD2016 is '"My Friends, My Community" – The benefits of inclusive environments for today's children and tomorrow's adults'. We believe people with Down syndrome must be able to enjoy full and equal rights both as children and adults and strongly support the #MyFriendsMyCommunity theme. Gary Flint is taking on the challenge of this year's Virgin Money London Marathon, running an incredible 26 miles on Sunday 26 April for us!
Gary, who lives in Exeter with wife Sara and two daughters, has been fitting in his training around work and family life, though he is no novice when it comes to marathon running having previously completed the Vienna marathon.
Gary says: "I'm very privileged to have the opportunity to run this year's London Marathon on behalf of Rainbow Living. The charity was set up by a group of parents who I know and who have children with a variety of disabilities. Their first project was to set up a home for their children in Exeter, supported by an external care provider. They have subsequently set up another home in Torquay and are now busy on a third project. Their vision and dedication has been an inspiration to me and many other people."
Thanks to the huge generosity of supporters, including Gary's employer Lloyds Banking Group which will match the first £500 of sponsorship, Gary has already smashed his target of £1,500 and he is now hoping to raise over £2,000.
To support Gary you can sponsor him by donating via his Virgin Money Giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/GaryFlint.
